He continues to be active on many fronts. He is recognized for research in several areas of quantitative retinal physiology, particularly measurements and mathematical modeling of oxygen transport in the mammalian retina, for which he has been funded by NIH since 1983. Since about 2000 he has also devoted attention to engineering education research, particularly in the areas of BME undergraduate curriculum and BME design. He has published more than 120 refereed journal and conference papers and has a Google Scholar H-index of 41. He was Chair of Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern from 1997-2002, Associate Director of the VaNTH NSF Engineering Research Center in Bioengineering Educational Technologies, and served as Associate Director of the Northwestern University Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program. He has held many other roles at Northwestern and nationally. He is the founding Director of the Northwestern Center for Engineering Education Research. From 2011 to 2021 he was the Institutional Leader of Northwestern’s participation in the multi-institutional Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL), whose mission is to improve STEM undergraduate education nationally by preparing STEM future faculty for the teaching part of their careers, and in 2019 he initiated the CIRTL Alumni Network as part of an NSF IUSE grant. For his work in education, he received the Theo Pilkington Outstanding Educator Award from the Biomedical Engineering Division of ASEE in 2007. He served as Chair of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) Annual Meeting in 2006, Chair of the National Meetings Committee of BMES, Chair of the Third Biomedical Engineering Education Summit in 2008, and has been Chair of the Academic Council, Chair of the College of Fellows, Treasurer, and Vice President of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). He was also Editor in Chief of Current Eye Research and is an Associate Editor of Biomedical Engineering Education. He is a fellow of BMES, AIMBE, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO).
