About Teaching and CourseSource

Justin Shaffer is a Teaching Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. His research focuses on the efficacy of high structure course design and pedagogies on college science and engineering courses and the attitudes that engineering students have towards biology. He teaches both biology and chemical engineering courses including anatomy and physiology, introductory biology, introductory thermodynamics, and material and energy balances. Prior to joining the Colorado School of Mines, Justin was an Assistant Teaching Professor at the University of California, Irvine where he taught large enrollment (400+) introductory biology, human anatomy, and non-majors biology courses. He was a SPIRE postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where he was trained in college science teaching and course development. As a proponent of active learning and evidence-based teaching strategies, Justin is excited to be a part of the CourseSource team to help educators share their work with the biology education community. By having more peer-reviewed resources available for instructors to use in their classrooms, we can as a community help improve the teaching and learning of countless students.
