About Teaching and CourseSource

Since joining the U.S. Coast Guard Academy faculty in 2008, I have taught courses in Chemistry, Microbiology, Biochemistry, and Toxicology to cadets who will graduate as Ensigns in the U.S. Coast Guard.  As I became increasingly aware of national movements in inclusive and evidence-based teaching practices during my growth as a professor, I began to adopt them in my courses, including Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) in General Chemistry and Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) in Biochemistry Laboratory. Both of these active learning strategies have rich, supportive communities that facilitate their adoption and continual improvement.  In the life sciences, the Vision & Change movement for undergraduate Biology inspired adoption of such teaching practices but also focused on Core Concepts underpinning the entire discipline.

CourseSource and its rich resources inspired the Society of Toxicology to create the Undergraduate Toxicology Learning Framework, building on the Vision and Change paradigm to create Core Concepts focused on Toxicology.  I am excited to share this work and encourage the creation of CourseSoruce resources to introduce the science of Toxicology to a new generation of learners and faculty.
