DryadLab - Using real data to engage students in scientific inquiry: a QUBES Faculty Mentoring Network

Join us for an online network that will be focused on testing hands-on, data-driven modules in the undergraduate classroom.

Dates:

January 25 - April 4, 2016

Description:

DryadLab and Quantitative Undergraduate Biology Education Synthesis (QUBES) are pleased to offer a unique networking and professional development opportunity for faculty interested in bringing authentic research data into undergraduate classrooms.  DryadLab is an educational extension of the Dryad Digital Repository, which contains freely available research data from thousands of published scientific papers. DryadLab provides open, high-quality, hands-on, data-driven educational modules suitable for use in undergraduate classrooms, developed by the authors of the original publications in collaboration with experienced educators.

You can review materials for three of the DryadLab modules:

  1. Introduction to Extinction and Extinction Bias

  2. Survivorship in the Natural World

  3. A Walk Through the Woods: Data Analysis of Structural Adaptations in Wood

Faculty will select and implement DryadLab modules in their courses, with a focus on providing students with quantitative skills. During the network, participants will interact online to share teaching tips, discuss implementation challenges, and define strategies to overcome these challenges.

Benefits of Participation

  • Access to ready-to-use teaching modules. Participants will incorporate at least 1 of the selected modules in Spring 2016 classes
  • Access to peer mentors for effective teaching tips and strategies in small group virtual meetings every two weeks
  • Letter sent from QUBES to your department chair recognizing your contribution to teaching scholarship

Application deadline is January 1, 2016. Accepted applicants will be notified by January 8.
