Benefits of Participation:

Upon the completion of the GEP/FMN training, faculty participants will be prepared to introduce genomics supported by GEP pedagogy tailored to their courses in the spring of 2019 or the 2019-2020 academic year. Specifically, faculty can share teaching materials that 1) use genomics data in problem solving, or 2) engage students in annotating sequence data.

Completing the GEP/FMN online training with GEP Faculty Mentor support will enable you to join the GEP, use GEP curriculum, and participate in GEP research in education and genomics, leading to publication with the GEP.   Depending on their level of participation, students and faculty can become co-authors on a resulting manuscript (see Leung et al. 2015 for an example).

Commitment:

Membership in the GEP:

Membership in the GEP requires faculty to teach with GEP curriculum in some capacity that is compatible with their teaching responsibilities. GEP faculty incorporate GEP pedagogy into introductory biology, genetics, genomics, molecular biology, bioinformatics, independent studies, and other courses. We recognize that faculty may teach courses with GEP on an every-other year or every few years schedule depending on their teaching responsibilities. When teaching with GEP pedagogy, faculty are asked to participate in our education research. Templates for IRB protocols are available and easily accessible. Participating faculty are eligible for authorship on GEP publications (education and science publications) depending on the way in which they participate.

Membership in the Fall 2018 GEP/FMN:

Membership in the Fall 2018 GEP/FMN requires active engagement with your GEP Faculty Mentor and the larger group as you learn about the GEP pedagogy, workflow, and projects. Specifically, you will attend 3 online Zoom meetings in Weeks 1, 2, and 13. You will also participate in 9 check-ins with your GEP Faculty Mentor via email or GEP communications tools in weeks 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 11,12, and 13. These check-ins will enable you to evaluate your understanding of GEP research, workflow, annotation tools, and pedagogy. They include 6 assignments due in weeks 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, and 11. In the final week of the GEP/FMN you will submit a revised plan for implementing GEP pedagogy and genomics curriculum into your teaching.
