Integrating Bioinformatics
RNA-seq using Galaxy

Applications Closed September 1, 2021

Accepted applicants will customize and implement their own adapted educational module for teaching RNA-seq data analysis in their desired life science discipline. Participants in this FMN will focus on how to use a powerful, yet easy to use, platform for high-throughput data-driven analyses in undergraduate life science courses. FMN participants will be supported and mentored in biweekly (every other week) virtual sessions that promote collaboration and mutual support.

Description:

The Network for Integrating Bioinformatics into Life Sciences Education (NIBLSE) is joining forces with BioQUEST/QUBES to work with faculty who are interested in adapting and implementing a NIBLSE-incubated learning resource on using the Galaxy web platform to analyze RNA-seq data. Galaxy uses a simple graphical user interface, allowing instructors and students with no coding or command line experience to freely access powerful bioinformatics tools. In addition, no special computational infrastructure is needed in the classroom, since all data processing is done in the freely available “Galaxy cloud” via a web interface. Participating educators will customize the module for use in their classrooms and are encouraged to select a publicly-available data set of interest or bring their own.

Benefits of Participation:

**Access to teaching modules - participants will incorporate selected materials in at least two class session (or equivalent) during the Fall 2021 semester (selected module can be found here).

**Online support throughout the process of implementing new materials in your course, including access to peer mentors in small group virtual meetings every two weeks. Mentors will share effective tips and strategies for adapting the learning resource for your course.

**A letter of recognition upon completion of all FMN requirements.

Commitments for Participation:

To qualify, participants must be willing to incorporate their adapted materials into at least two class periods (or equivalent) in their teaching during the Fall 2021 semester. Participants must also be able to commit ~1 hour per week for working with mentors and collaborating with other participants around the customization and implementation of the teaching materials. Additional time outside of these discussions may be required for independent work on adapting and reviewing modules.

Dates & Location:

The virtual kick-off will be held in September 7, 2021 (see Meeting Schedule to time and location). The FMN will continue online to support the customization and implementation of activities in your course during the Fall 2021 semester.
