Description

This module takes students through real life scenarios to examine resonance and its destructive power using differential equation models. What is resonance? How does it happen? Why is it important? Three cases are presented: shattering a wine glass, collapse of a suspension bridge, and crash of aircrafts. Pure resonance and practical resonance are introduced through modeling the torsional dynamics of a suspension bridge. Students solve second-order non-homogeneous differential equations analytically and numerically. Furthermore, they graph, observe, describe and explain the motion and behaviors of the solutions.

Can a human singing voice shatter a wine glass?

Any structure is susceptible to damage by the force of resonance. In this project, you will study the phenomena of mechanical resonance and understand its role using second-order linear ordinary differential equations.
