Society for Mathematical Biology

The Society for Mathematical Biology promotes the development and dissemination of research at the interface between the mathematical and biological sciences through its meetings, awards, and publications. The Society serves a diverse community of researchers and educators in academia, industry, and in government agencies throughout the world.

The Education Subgroup of SMB is comprised of members who desire to improve the teaching and mentoring of future scientists, and in particular undergraduate and graduate mathematical and computational biology researchers. As new research frontiers emerge, our members seek to understand the best practices to help future researchers of biological questions be successful in this space. Content areas include, but are not limited to the teaching and learning of modeling, computing, data science, and quantitative reasoning. Challenge spaces include, but are not limited to designing learning experiences across disciplines, defining and assessing outcomes for new interdisciplinary and technological spaces, integrating data with mathematical modeling, educational outreach initiatives, and providing an inclusive and diverse environment for learning and for the profession.

QUBES Project

The mission of the Quantitative Undergraduate Biology Education and Synthesis (QUBES) project is to improve learning opportunities for all students enrolled in undergraduate biology courses by reflecting the centrality of quantitative approaches in modern biology [more info about QUBES]. One of the ways that QUBES promotes quantitative approaches is by partnering with existing projects and communities to facilitate the discovery and use of their materials [more info about partner projects].

The Society for Mathematical Biology / QUBES collaboration

SMB was a founding member of the QUBES Consortium, established in 2014 to link together professional societies and their members around the common goal of making math biology educational resources and research more available to the community. Dr. Carrie Diaz Eaton, a co-PI of the QUBES project has also served in leadership role for the SMB education committee and the Education Subgroup. QUBES has also sponsored Ambassadors to attend the SMB meetings.
