    Colleagues, 

    We recently received notification that our IUSE proposal Enabling Future Teachers to Experience Science Investigation and Engineering Design in Introductory Undergraduate STEM Classrooms has been funded. The project goals are to (1) engage and support undergraduate faculty in developing, testing, and implementing high-quality instructional materials that put investigation and design at the center of introductory science courses that serve future teachers; and (2) assess the impact of the use of the materials and the development process. To achieve the project goals, we are hiring two postdocs to engage in research and support the materials development process. The positions have been posted, and I could use your help in advertising broadly.     Science Education Specialist
     

    Two Science Education Specialists (SES) will be hired on temporary, 11-month positions and serve a central role in the NSF-funded project "Enabling Future Teachers to Experience Science Investigation and Engineering Design in Introductory Undergraduate STEM Classrooms"
    (www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=2013338). 

    The positions will last for a minimum of two years, and up to four years. The SES will work with project leaders to (1) develop and validate instruments to assess the impact of the development process and new material, (2) conduct research using the instruments, interviews, and classroom observations, and (3) manage geographically dispersed teams of faculty and writers in developing and testing curricular materials. The SES will report to the PI of the project and may be based anywhere in the country. The start date is October 1, or as soon as possible thereafter. All employees are expected to support CWU's commitment to diversity and to bring and support inclusion into the university environment. 

    Job Duties:

    The Science Education Specialists (SES) will serve a central role in achieving the goals of the NSF-funded project "Enabling Future Teachers to Experience Science Investigation and Engineering Design in Introductory Undergraduate STEM Classrooms." 

    Education Research: In collaboration with project leadership, the SES will

    - Work as part of a team to develop and modify instruments to assess (1) pre-service teachers' knowledge and perceived abilities in facilitating investigation and design, and (2) teacher educators' development in facilitating investigation and design;

    - Use assessment instruments, interviews, and classroom observations to collect project-wide data;

    - Analyze data to provide formative feedback to teacher educators and to determine the impact of the project;

    - Pursue research questions that emerge from project-wide data;

    - Author or co-author conference presentations, journal articles, and website resources to communicate results of the research

    Project Management: With guidance and support from project leadership, the SES will

    - Support geographically-dispersed teams of faculty and authors in achieving project milestones;

    - Organize and lead professional development opportunities for project participants;

    - Coordinate and communicate work timelines across project components.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • PhD in Biology/Biology Education, Chemistry/Chemistry Education, Geoscience/Geoscience Education, Physics/Physics Education, Science Education, or related field
    • Demonstrated interest in science education research and commitment to improving teaching and learning
    • Ability in (or willingness to learn) qualitative and quantitative educational research methods
    • Demonstrated experience in working as part of a team to achieve common goals
    • Familiarity with and/or willingness to learn and use the SERCkit content management system, Google Drive, and other tools that support in-person and remote collaboration
    • Demonstrated ability to collect and work with quantitative data; comfort with basic statistics and data visualization techniques; willingness to grow in this area
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills
    • Ability to clearly communicate ideas, claims and supporting argument in writing and in presentation – a writing sample will be requested 
    • Willingness to travel to project meetings and to conduct classroom observations and interviews as needed and as is determined to be safe
    • Demonstrated willingness to work with and/or experience working with collaborators and students from a wide range of abilities, backgrounds and experiences

    Preferred Qualifications
    Please address in your cover letter:

    • Understanding of and experience with national K-12 science education standards and K-12 teacher preparation
    • Experience with project management, managing complex work timelines with deadlines and budgets
    • Experience with human subjects research
    • Experience writing and/or editing educational materials for undergraduate students
    • Demonstrated participation in programs designed to promote inclusion

    Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

    Salary: $60,000 plus benefits

     

    Appointment: Full-Time, 9 Month Appointment plus 2 Month Smmer Appointment (11 Month Total)
