About Teaching and CourseSource

Erin Shortlidge is an Associate Professor of Biology at Portland State University where she leads the Biology Education Research group (www.shortlidgegroup.org). Her PhD work focused on moss reproductive ecophysiology, but during that time her interests shifted more towards thinking about how to teach science the way science is done. Dr. Shortlidge sought out a postdoc in biology education research and has not looked back since. She teaches Principles of Biology, Scientific Teaching, and other graduate and undergraduate level courses on best practices in research and building science capital. Her research group studies various aspects of the education ecosystem including: course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) - from the instructor and student perspectives, graduate teaching assistants use of inclusive and evidence-based practices, sense of belonging in STEM, transfer student experiences in STEM, and interdisciplinary science in undergraduate education.
