QUBES: A Tool for Resources, Research, Mentoring, and Community in Quantitative Biology Education (Speaker: DorothyBelle Poli)

Category: Workshop
Description: Quantitative biology is a focus area for educational reform specifically mentioned in the national document “Vision & Change”. Modern, real-world science requires biologists to be fluent in mathematical reasoning and skills. As a way to help connect the vast world of biologists to mathematicians, in a way that is productive for both groups, Quantitative Undergraduate Biology Education and Synthesis (QUBES) was developed. QUBES is an NSF sponsored 5 year consortium of societies, organizations, universities, and colleges working to create an online community that shares teaching materials, aids in finding mentors, links universities to small schools and community colleges, and promotes collaboration through online tools to aid quantitative biology education. Together with HubZero, QUBES has created an online community called the QUBESHub. The demonstration table will provide an interactive opportunity for potential QUBES users and contributors to learn about the QUBES mission and QUBESHub. We will bring a laptop and iPads for people to investigate the QUBESHub on site. Through interactive exploration, participants will have their questions answered about this tool’s capabilities, learn about future opportunities to participants, brainstorm about their own use of the QUBESHub, and leave with the desire and knowledge to participate in the online community.
