BioQUEST QUBES

StaffA message from the Executive Director:

Attending the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) conference over the past week was an incredible opportunity to connect with our partners and witness the inspirational progress being made in STEM education. From presentations (iGELS, QB@CC, NCSE and many others!) to posters, I found it to be truly reenergizing to see the passion and collaboration driving innovation and accessibility for educators -- and their students -- around the nation. A huge thank you to the NABT conference organizers for providing the opportunity.

As I take time over the next few weeks to reflect on my experiences, I am filled with gratitude for the supportive community that makes it all possible. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I am especially thankful for the BioQUEST community - educators, thought leaders and disruptors who are shaping the future of STEM education together with us. Thank you for being a part of our mission and for joining us on the evolution and revolution of STEM education.

Sincerely,

Sarah Prescott

BioQUEST Executive Director

QUBES Corner

Twenty-three (23) educational resources were published to the QUBES Library in October with 3,103 resources in total. Browse the new resources here.

Featured Resources

  • Assessment: When tests disagree, how do I know if I have COVID-19? Brought to you by ImmunoReach: Interdisciplinary Immunology Education Consortium In this activity, students learned about the immune response to infection by exploring different types of tests—PCR, antigen, and antibody tests—to detect SARS-CoV-2 viral genetic material, antigens, or anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. Students applied core concepts and competencies from Vision & Change (https://visionandchange.org/). The activity followed a jigsaw format, where students selected one of three specialties (epidemiologist, infectious disease doctor, or immunologist) and completed an assignment, either in-class or as homework, based on their chosen specialty.

  • HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT AQUATIC LAB (HEAL) CURE  Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) provide students with genuine research experiences and associated skills in the classroom. This resource, the HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT AQUATIC LAB (HEAL) CURE is a semester-long project scaffolded with activities that build the skills associated with research. It is targeting an upper division level ecology course but can be adapted to different levels and courses. This CURE is scaffolded over a semester, which prepares students to conduct a project in aquatic or aquatic adjacent (e.g., riparian) habitat. The resources include timeline, proposal worksheet, talk directions and talk rubric.

Biology Student Science Policy Fellowships, Internships, & Training Opportunities

Numerous opportunities exist for early career scientists to build skills and explore careers in science policy. American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) compiled a thorough list of opportunities for biologists studying in the United States. While most positions are for researchers who have already completed a graduate degree, some opportunities are available for current graduate and undergraduate students.

Call for Proposals: The Disruptor Blog

Submit your work to author a post for the 2025 blog series. The deadline for submissions is December 6, 2024.

The 2025 AAAS-IUSE blog is dedicated to promoting research on inclusive STEM ecosystems for faculty, students, and the greater undergraduate community. Authors should focus on the implications of their work; how studies, strategies, and examples can serve as a model for others; and identifying opportunities, barriers, and questions surrounding these strategies.

ImmunoReach asking for manuscripts related to the teaching of immunology and/or outreach activities related to immunology

Photo of child looking through microscopeImmunology is a difficult topic to teach to undergraduates due to its complexity. Our group has organized a new immunology education special topic called “Immunology Education: In the Classroom and Beyond” at Frontiers in Education and Frontiers in Immunology. We plan to organize a collection of articles related to the teaching of immunology and/or outreach activities related to immunology.

Whether you teach immunology as a stand-alone course, or as a subtopic in an interdisciplinary, introductory or advanced course, we would love to have your distinct viewpoint in this discussion. Please consider submitting a manuscript.
