Welcome to a list of Modules Ready or Adaptable for Online Learning, discoverable on Quantitative Undergraduate Biology Education Synthesis (QUBES)! We hope this list can help faculty more easily find quality online learning activities.
2
This is a work in progress, created by a QUBEShub user. It is "unofficial", and incomlete, but hopefully useful! Please contribute to improve its utility.
3
For each module, we describe the activities that a student does (e.g., analyzing datasets, interpreting figures), the module components that are included to aid teaching (e.g., pre-class activities, guided worksheets), and some notes on how straightforward it would be to implement the module in an online learning setting.
4
The attributes recorded for each module are below, on this "Description and Instructions" sheet.
5
The actual data for each module are included on the next sheet called "Modules" (tab below).
6
Jump to the next sheet to begin searching. If you mouse over the column name, you'll see a small arrow that will allow you to sort the entire sheet by that attribute.
7
We have posted this incomplete list because we wanted to provide this resource to the community as soon as possible. If you would like to contribute by adding modules you know about or by adding metadata for modules, please make comments/suggestions or edit the spreadsheet; we would be thrilled to have your help.
8
If you have created an online adaptation to an existing module, please post it to QUBES so that others can use your adaptation and you can receive credit for your teaching scholarship!https://qubeshub.org/qubesresources/publications/submit
9
If you have other modules you've created, consider posting them to QUBES for others to find, use, and adapt. Your "I threw this together" online activity might be someone else's "OMG! This is just what I needed for Thursday!" lifesaver! You can learn more about posting your modules here:https://qubeshub.org/qubesresources/oer

COLUMN CATEGORYCOLUMN NAMESCOLUMN DESCRIPTIONS
13
NAMENameThe name of the module.
14
THE MOST IMPORTANT STUFFMainTopicThe main topic covered by the module: Ecology, Evolution, Global Change (e.g., just climate data), Genetics, Quantitative Skills Only, Physiology, Other.
15
OnlineImplementationCategoryOne person's estimate of whether the module needs minor, moderate, or major changes before it is ready for online learning implementation. Subjective.
16
BASIC METADATAAuthorsYou guessed it - the authors of the module. Sometimes a module is an adaptation of a previously openly shared resource. This column will contain the most recent contributors, and the full attributions should be evident in the module itself.
17
OriginalSourceLinkA permanent link to the original resource, hosted by its creators. This column may be blank if the resource was originally posted on QUBESHub.
18
QUBESLinkA link to where the resource was discovered on QUBESHub, which often points to the original source link, and sometimes has additional information or associated resources (e.g., discussions, adaptation/versions, etc.).
19
GroupsQUBESPageThe projects that contribute resources to QUBESHub often have a local "group" site that hosts their work, and will usually link to their own websites. If you like a module, this is a great way of finding more stuff you might like.
20
OnlineTagWhether the module was tagged by the contributor as appropriate for online learning: Yes(1) or No(0). (This may reflect the current state of the implementation, not the potential for online use per se.)
21
ResourceWalkthroughWhether the module already has a video walkthrough from the module creator hosted on the Teaching Quantitative Biology Online hub on the QUBES website: Yes(1) or No(0).https://qubeshub.org/community/groups/quant_bio_online/teachertalk
22
THINGS STUDENTS DO IN THE MODULECollectDataInLabOrFieldStudents collect data in the field or lab: Yes(1) or No(0). Note that modules with these components may still be used in an online setting if the lab/field components are removed or adapted.
23
CollectDataOnlineStudents collect data online, such as by analyzing images: Yes(1) or No(0).
24
AnalyzeDatasetStudents wrangle or analyze datasets by calculating statistics, making figures, etc: Yes(1) or No(0).
25
InterpretFigureStudents interpreting graphs: Yes(1) or No(0).
26
SimulateDataStudents simulate data, such as by running stochastic models in Netlogo or doing coin flip experiments in Excel: Yes(1) or No(0).
27
SubstantialWritingActivityStudents write substantially beyond answering questions on a worksheet (i.e., more than a few sentences): Yes(1) or No(0).
28
ReadPrimaryLiteratureStudents read primary scientific papers: Yes(1) or No(0).
29
ExploreMathematicalModelStudents work with a mathematical model in any way: Yes(1) or No(0).
30
PresentMaterialtoPeersStudents present their results to their peers, such as by presenting projects using Powerpoints: Yes(1) or No(0).
31
FindInfoOnlineStudents find information online in a self-directed fashion, such as by looking up information on species featured in the module: Yes(1) or No(0).
32
UseRStudents use R: Yes(1) or No(0). Note that most modules that use Excel could also use R, but only a few are pre-designed to be used with R.
33
UseExcelStudents using Excel for data wranging, analysis, or visualization: Yes(1) or No(0).
34
OtherSoftwareUsedIf the students use software besides R or Excel, it is listed here. If not, there is an NA.
35
THINGS INSTRUCTOR PREPARES OR USES FOR THE MODULEPreClassActivityA pre-class activity is included to help the students prepare to use the concepts or skills in the module: Yes(1) or No(0).
36
PowerpointA Powerpoint for the instructor to use to guide learning is included in the module: Yes(1) or No(0). Note that this method may need to be modified for asynchronous learning.
37
ThinkPairShareQuestionsQuestions for think-pair-share activities are included in the module: Yes(1) or No(0). Note that this method may need to be modified for asynchronous learning.
38
GuidedWorksheetA self-guided student worksheet is included in the module: Yes(1) or No(0).
39
OTHERInfectiousDiseaseRelatedWhether the module involves infectious diseases: Yes(1) or No(0).
40
OtherNotesSome notes or suggestions for how the module might be modified for online learning.
