      Hi, Suann! Having the students focus on a single taxon, learn and think deeply about that taxon, and work with large datasets of herbarium specimen images all seemed to grow their appreciation of plants in general. The second assignment requires the student to do research on their specific taxon--what does it look like, where does it occur, when does it usually flower--which helps the students connect with the species and perhaps view it as their own. In the third assignment, they look at 30-100 herbarium specimens and develop a guide to reproductive structures of that species. Later, as the students continue to iterate their analyses, they come to learn the "story" of their specific species. This is mostly speculation based off of observations, but the students seemed to connect to plants better with these activities.

    This looks super exciting. Thanks for sharing the video introduction to the undergraduate research opportunities.

    I found the Consortium of California Herbaria Portal (CCH2) but I'm not finding more information about the course there. I recognize that these resources are just emerging but I'd be interested to hear if there are materials you can share (even drafty ones) so I can get a better sense of how this might fit into my class.
