Description

This module contains activities to help students understand the biology of programmed translational frameshifts (PTFs) in phages, how to identify PTFs, and how to annotate them.

Learning objectives:  

After completing this module, students should be able to:

  • Annotate a programmed translational frameshift
  • Identify the protein products of the FS and the function of the protein products (see “Programmed Translational Frameshifts Powerpoint”)
  • Explain how the ribosome produces protein products from the FS (see “Programmed Translational Frameshifts Powerpoint”)
  • Explain/present the data on PTFS from journal articles in the primary literature (see “Guidelines_for_Journal_Club_Presentation--Students.docx, ”Guidelines_for_Journal_Club_Presentation_WithExample--for_Faculty_with_Assessment.docx" and Frameshift Articles)

How is the module structured to promote student development as a scientist?  Students using activities in this module will use primary literature, find and annotate a PTF, and work with other student scientists.

Intended Teaching Setting

Course level: All levels

Instructional Setting:  In-person or online

Implementation Time Frame:  approximately 3 hours
