Special features this year — FREE to students, FREE to those from developing countries, and each paid registrant may bring along a FREE guest. The more the merrier!!! Saturday evening student social time with Mathematical Escape Room adventure!
SIMIODE EXPO is a yearly multi-day virtual international conference for faculty, students, and other parties interested in teaching and learning differential equations through modeling. This conference is part of a Community of Practice in SIMIODE — Systemic Initiative for Modeling Investigations and Opportunities in Differential Equations.
The conference offers presentations and discussions on a tapestry of issues for teaching differential equations using modeling and some broader mathematical topics. Typically the conference includes invited keynote speakers, contributed talks, and an opportunity for undergraduate students to present their modeling work. We are planning two workshops, on using modeling in teaching (MINDE) and on developing materials for teaching (DEMARC). There will be a strong student thread, sharing experiences, results, and viewpoints on modeling in coursework.
Call for Abstracts
We welcome from interested parties who wish to share their modeling experiences and scholarship. Submit abstracts for 25 minute talks. Tell us about your modeling experiences as a teacher, or as a student. Students, share your learning experiences, your SCUDEM actions, and your own modeling explorations.
Abstracts due: 14 January 2025. Acceptance notification: No Later Than 1 February 2025 — we will try for two weeks from submission.
Possible Sessions:
- Mathematical Modeling in Differential Equations
- Mathematical Modeling in Calculus, Algebra, etc.
- Mathematical Modeling Beyond the Classroom
- Technology in Support of Modeling
- Training Students in Technical Writing
- Grading Rubrics for Modeling Projects
- Alternative Grading in Differential Equations
- Experiences with Artificial Intelligence
- Cultural and Ethical Issues in Modeling
- Your call - send suggestions to Director@simiode.org.
Student Sessions:
- Class Modeling Projects
- SCUDEM Efforts
- Modeling Competition Experiences
- Experiences and Perspectives on Modeling in Learning
- Undergraduate Research in Modeling
- Saturday Night Student Social Time and Escape Room Adventure
Registration
In the spirit of inclusivity, registration for our event will be FREE for participants from developing countries, and FREE for students. Even though the cost is free, you will need to register.
Early-bird registration is US$65 until 14 January 2025. Regular registration is US$95. Every paid registration can nominate a colleague to receive a complimentary ticket. Registration fees are used to cover technology costs for running the conference and sustain SIMIODE in its non-profit mission.
Conference Schedule
As the schedule is finalized, we will link to that information here.
Keynoters
- Cynthia Nicol - The University of British Columbia, Pedagogies Supporting the Well-being of the Self, Community, and Land.
- Feryal Alayont - Grand Valley State University; Korana Burke - University of California, Davis; Erin Griesenauer - Eckerd College; Jeremy Shaw - Oregon State University-Cascades; Rohit Thomas - University of California, Davis, Ethical Reasoning: An Essential Component of Mathematical Modeling.
Workshops
We will offer two workshops. Express your interest on the registration form or write to Director@simiode.org.
- Modeling Bootcamp (MINDE - Model INstructors in Differential Equations) for learning how to use modeling in teaching differential equations (two 2-hour sessions).
- Publishing Your Modeling Scenario Ideas (DEMARC - Differential Equations Model And Resource Creators) for writers who wish to develop Modeling Scenarios which will be peer-reviewed and published in SIMIODE (one 2-hour session with follow-up session in two weeks).
Student Thread
EXPO 2025 will have a strong student thread in which students are encouraged to present the results of models they have worked on in class or in competitions and share their experiences in learning differential equations in a modeling context. Faculty NEED to hear from students and giving conference talks is a great experience for students.
Saturday night student social time with chats in themed breakout groups and Escape Room adventure.
We invite contributions from undergraduate and high school students! We encourage excellent presentations by students on SIMIODE Modeling Scenarios they’ve worked through in a class, modeling projects inspired by coursework and extending beyond class work, as well as undergraduate research in mathematical modeling. In addition, Outstanding Award recipients from the SCUDEM 2024 student mathematical modeling challenge are invited, as in past years, to showcase their fine work. Student talks will be organized in sessions to encourage the formation of community among presenters of similar-level projects.
Panel Sessions
Possible one hour long panels:
- Why take a modeling-first approach in differential equations?
- Questions of course design and syllabus coverage.
- What really happens in a modeling-based course?
- SIMIODE textbook: voices of experience.
- What are sources for ideas and data for modeling activities in class and how does one use them?
Along with call for abstracts we invite you to submit your ideas for a panel you would like to organize with others. Or let us know if you would like to participate in one of the panels described above. Send to Director@simiode.org.
Past Conferences
Please see the detail pages for each conference: 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021 where you will find slides and videos to many of the past talks. Or you can go directly to the SIMIODE YouTube channel to view videos.
We look forward to your participation this year. Thank you.
