Tasks
Demonstration
Create a submission that addresses all the tasks below. Your submission may be in any format.
Test a hypothesis about a single mean
Suppose a sample of 22 fish from Separation Lake have a mean mercury concentration of 0.53 mg/kg and a standard deviation of 0.3 mg/kg. Conduct a hypothesis t-test (at the level of significance) for the claim that the average concentration of these fish is above 0.5 mg/kg.
Include the following steps.
- Label your null and alternative hypothesis with the correct symbols.
Hint: the claim is that
- Label the values of the test statistic and P-value.
- Use graphs to depict both the rejection region and the P-value.
- State the decision as either "reject the null hypothesis" or "fail to reject the null hypothesis" and explain why.
- State and contextualize the final conclusion.
- If the healthy limit of mercury is set at 0.5 mg/kg, what is your recommendation on whether or not fish from this population are safe to eat? Consider the nuances of the problem as well as your conclusion in step 5.
