Abstract

Resource Image We examine (1) first order exponential growth or decay and (2) second order, linear, constant coefficient differential equations, and show the advantage of learning differential equations in a modeling context for informed conjectures of their solution.

Description

From Winkel, Brian. 2015.  Informed Conjecturing of Solutions for Differential Equations in a Modeling Context, PRIMUS: Problems, Resources, and Issues in Mathematics Undergraduate Studies, 25(2): 158-169.

We examine two differential equations, (1)  first order exponential growth or decay and (2) second order, linear, constant coefficient differential equations, and show the advantage of learning differential equations in a modeling context for informed conjectures of their solution. We follow with a discussion of the complete analysis afforded by this approach, including parameter estimation.
