Biography
Eons ago I received a B.A. in biochemistry from the University of Chicago, followed by a Ph.D. in pharmacology from Stanford University and post doc in biophysics at Brandeis University. I have worked over the years as a research scientist (University of California, Santa Barbara, Brandeis University, and Lesley University), science educator, curriculum developer, financial planner, community activist, and radio commentator. I have taught undergraduate and graduate level courses (physics, chemistry, modeling complex systems, pharmacology, and science education). While at Lesley University, Cambridge MA, I was co-PI and later director of the Lesley-TERC project (funded by NSF and US. Dept. of Education, FIPSE) that created 'de novo,' the first fully online masters’ degree program for K-8 science educators in 2000. I am active in several local, regional, and national science advisory boards (including BioQUEST). A primary personal goal is to increase number of students (especially those from unrepresented groups) pursuing STEM careers. After a stint as STEM Dean at Massachusetts Bay Community College, I established and run MassBay's 'Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology Innovation' for our committed, overworked and very much underpaid faculty. STEM students at community colleges are amazing. MassBay has nurtured 21 Barry M. Goldwater Scholars since 1996.
