These tutorials are designed to show essential data analysis techniques using a spreadsheet program such as Excel. Follow the tutorials in sequence to learn the fundamentals of using a spreadsheet program to organize data, use formulae and functions to calculate statistical values including mean, standard deviation, standard error of the mean, 95% confidence intervals, plot graphs with error bars, perform t-tests, and plot the data as histograms.

The first of these modifications were produced by participants in the 2017 HHMI/QUBES Faculty Mentoring Network. Introductory students are asked to learn terms for descriptive statistics and complete a matching exercise. Tutorial 4 was shorted to just the full calculations of t values.

The tutorial has two approaches for teaching about graph building and choosing the appropriate graph for different data types, a scaffolding approach and a exploration approach which can be utilized depending on how you wish to use the resource.

HHMI tutorial modules were modified and condensed to bring all students up to the same skill level, and students took a pre-assessment to demonstrate adequate preparation for class.
