The Improvement of General Education Life Science courses (IGELS) project seeks to clarify the landscape of courses offered in general education life sciences with the goal of supporting institutions and instructors in reform efforts.  We recognize there exists a major opportunity to work with a large group of undergraduates who will not become research scientists or physicians and who take a GELS course simply to satisfy their degree’s science requirement.  Because this may be the only biology course these students take during their collegiate career, their instructors have an enormous task of moving students toward science literacy, science appreciation, and science understanding in a limited amount of time.  We feel the recommendations and competencies outlined in V&C provide a visionary path with many desirable outcomes that are appropriate for GELS courses and their students.  IGELS will use the model of engagement, productivity, and collaboration used to develop V&C, to investigate several of these issues.
