Undergraduate Student Experiences with Citizen Science

Are you interested in using a citizen science project in a higher education course? Do you have an interest in developing instructional activities? If so, please apply to participate in a partnership to create an instructional activity related to a citizen science project that could be used in higher education courses. We will pair each selected instructor with staff from a citizen science project to create a lesson plan and all supporting materials. The instructor will be primarily responsible for creating the materials, but a project staff member will provide periodic feedback. In exchange, the Undergraduate Student Experiences with Citizen Science (USE Cit Sci) Network will provide professional development and a $1000 stipend to the instructor, as well as a $250 stipend to the project staff member.

We have listed a few selected projects that are interested in being paired with an instructor, but we also have a place on the application form for you to indicate if you already have a working relationship with a citizen science project and would like to partner with them. More information can be found on this FAQ sheet.

Educator-citizen science leader discussions a success!

Thanks to the participants of our recent facilitated discussions between educators and citizen science project leaders last month, and thanks especially to Graise Lee Jenni and Maria Palamar of Resolve Conservation for facilitating!

We were gratified to find that educators and project leaders were both excited to work more closely together, and that there was enthusiasm for some educator-project partnerships that we hope to develop in the coming year.

Linked here you can find a summary of the discussions, including a summary of perspectives on potential barriers, and suggestions for strengthening educator-project relationships moving forward.

If you would like to keep the conversation going, feel free to start up a Discussion Forum thread!

Also, USE CitSci will host virtual office hours on Friday, December 8th from 11a – 1p ET at this Zoom link. Feel free to drop by to ask questions or connect with other folks that have used citizen science in their classrooms, or who are considering it.

Finally, be on the lookout in January for an email soliciting interest in 1-on-1 partnerships between educators and citizen science projects in order to help develop educator resources for the community. USE CitSci will have modest stipends available to facilitate those partnerships!

Registration is now open for both virtual (May 15 onward) and in-person (May 22-26, Tempe, Arizona) attendance at the 2023 C*Science Conference.

Hello Undergraduate Student Experiences with Citizen Science (USE CitSci) network members!

Over the coming months we intend to facilitate conversations between educators and project managers to enable each group to better understand the needs of the other. What project resources would help you implement a given project in your classroom? What should educators be aware of from the project perspective to ensure their data are useful? Etc.

If you are either an educator or help manage a citizen science project and would be interested in participating in these conversations via small-group webinars in the spring and summer, please fill out this interest form. We’ll send out more information to those on the list in a few weeks. Looking forward to your participation!

Share your story and connect with others doing citizen and community science at the 2023 C*Science Conference, May 22-26, 2023 in Phoenix/Tempe, Arizona. The call for individual presentations is now open!

C*Sci 2023 features sessions specifically designed to expand your perspectives and skills for the most meaningful and impactful public research partnerships. Hear from and engage with science professionals, engagement specialists, funders, app designers, community leaders, and others whose expertise can help you focus on and enhance your work in this field. Elevate your own unique contributions to the field- submit an idea for an individual presentation (call closes Jan. 27, 2023).

Individual presentations can share research, stories, or emerging work - these are all ways to connect around ideas, challenges, and lessons learned, and to share practices and insights that advance our work and this field. The Social Justice Working Group associated with the Undergraduate Student Experiences with Citizen Science Network is looking for examples of participatory research methods (including but not limited to citizen science or community science) being used to teach about or enact social justice with undergrads in STEM classes. Please pass along any examples you know (from you, someone you know, published literature, etc.) using this form (https://forms.gle/FMtZFwkCSohecpjY8)! We have some examples from the published literature but know there are more examples out there.

If the example is from your work, we encourage you to add a short description (or link) of what you did to the "Collections" on our Network webpage. I would like to draw the attention of our members (and others) to this conference.  Although citizen science is not mentioned explicitly in the presentation abstracts, the conference will provide an opportunity to perhaps learn why not and to introduce the subject in discussions.
