Robert Loeb's Implementation of A Growing Concern

For my online Introductory Soils course I am implementing The Growing Concern Module including Unit 1 Impacts of Land Use; Unit 2 Soil Characteristics & Their Relationship to Land Use Practices; Unit 3 Natural and Agricultural Erosion Rates; Unit 4 Using SoilWeb to Investigate the Soil Beneath You; Unit 5 Predicting the Effects of Climate Change on Soil Loss and Unit 6 Creating an Agricultural "Fact Sheet". In mid-February I will open the first unit and space the following units in two week intervals. I plan to evaluate and modify my implementation as I see the student response (or not if all goes well).

Robert Eli Loeb

Robert E. Loeb is a professor of Biology and Forestry at Penn State DuBois. He teaches introductory biology for majors and non-majors as well as introductory soil science. Also, he is the academic advisor for Penn State DuBois students planning to enter the Eberly College of Science at Penn State University Park Campus. His awards from Penn State are: Dr. James Robinson Equal Opportunity Award (2018); Milton S. Eisenhower Award for Distinguished Teaching (2015); John Romano Faculty/Staff Diversity Recognition Award (2015); and DuBois Educational Foundation Educator of the Year (2013)

Dr. Loeb's long-term ecological research is focused on the historical ecology and conservation of old growth urban forests. As well, he is conducting research with undergraduates on the ecology and management of urban natural areas in Nashville and Philadelphia. He is a Certified Senior Ecologist, Ecological Society of America (2009) and Kenan Fellow, National Tropical Botanical Gardens (2008).
