MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge, a program of SIAM, is a free contest for high school juniors and seniors in the U.S. and sixth form students in England and Wales. The Challenge is entirely Internet-based with no registration or participation fees. M3C offers resources for high school students and teachers, such as:
Handbooks
Videos
Technical computing advice
Practice problems and an archive of past problems and solutions
This lesson focuses on ways that scientists identify and use data to understand ecological disturbance events using data from five public datasets. The main lesson focused on interpretation of figures, while optional coding extensions teach R skills.

The tutorial has two approaches for teaching about graph building and choosing the appropriate graph for different data types, a scaffolding approach and a exploration approach which can be utilized depending on how you wish to use the resource.
These two hands-on activities are based on a Howard Hughes Medical Institute 2013 Holiday Lectures on Science video (http://www.hhmi.org/biointeractive/cancer-genetic-disease-video-highlights) featuring researcher Dr. Charles L. Sawyers.
