Faculty Mentoring Networks

The BioGraphI (Biologists and Graph Interpretation) project is no longer accepting applications from interested faculty to participate in our Spring 2025 Faculty Mentoring Network (FMN). During this semester-long professional development opportunity, participants will learn how to prepare and implement their own BioGraphI modules into their courses. BioGraphI modules are designed to address data literacy skills while fostering diversity in undergraduate biology classrooms. These modules are lessons about graph and data interpretation that feature the scientific contributions of counterstereotypical biologists who are members of underrepresented groups. BioGraphI lessons include video interviews with these biologists, allowing students to hear directly from counterstereotypical scientists about their discoveries. For example BioGraphI lesson modules, please visit our Modules page.

What will you do as BioGraphI FMN Participant?

From February to May, BioGraphI FMN participants will meet regularly online with faculty colleagues from other institutions to develop new BioGraphI modules and receive feedback from one another. As a BioGraphI module author, you will:

  1. Craft learning objectives for your BioGraphI module,
  2. Select a counterstereotypical biologist whose data figures align with your learning objectives,
  3. Invite that counterstereotypical biologist to coauthor your module,
  4. Develop/Begin development of a lesson guide and presentation slides with your coauthor, and
  5. Interview/Schedule interview with your coauthor and record it for your module.

Along the way, you will gain experience with DEI topics, backward design, Universal Design for Learning, interviewing, and more. At the end of the FMN, you will publish your new module on the QUBES Hub and have made lasting connections with like-minded faculty. For the meeting times and schedule of topics, visit the Spring FMN website here

How do you apply?

Applications for the Spring FMN are due on December 6, 2024 and can be submitted through our application link. The application collects basic contact and institutional information and includes answers to the following questions:

  • What do you hope to gain by participating in this FMN? What do you hope to contribute? (For example, have you already employed material in your courses to address themes of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)? If not, how might this FMN assist you in this area?)
  • The BioGraphI FMN values diverse perspectives. If you wish, please share with us any of your identities that may be salient.
  • How you envision incorporating BioGraphI into your teaching (course information, possible topics)?

All instructors are welcome to apply, including future and early-career faculty! Participants who complete our FMN are eligible for a $1000 stipend once their modules are published on the QUBES Hub.
