Abstract

Resource Image We build a mathematical model for the rate of drying in a wet cloth while hanging in air. A model can be based on underlying physical principles (analytic) or based on observations and reasoned equations, but no physical assumptions (empirical).

Description

A very common phenomenon is the drying of a face cloth or wash cloth. As time goes on the mass of the water in the cloth decreases. But at what rate does it decrease? What physical assumptions might you make to build a differential equation for W'(t), the rate of change in the mass of the wash cloth over time? We conducted an experiment for you and collected data for which you can build a differential equation model for W(t) the mass (in grams) of the water in the cloth at time t (in minutes).
