Description

In the first part of the activity, students will read a description of a method used to rate chess players. From the verbal description of the method (known as Elo's method), students will derive a first order difference equation. Students will then do a brief qualitative analysis of the difference equation.

In the second part of the activity, students will work with a system of two difference equations to illustrate one of the properties of Elo's method. In part 3, students will apply Elo's Method to simulated data.

Students will submit answers to this activity in a short question and answer format with explanations given both with mathematical equations and verbal explanations.

This activity can be used as a guided example in class, a small group activity in class, or a group homework activity.
