From a chemical engineering point of view emptying processing and storage tanks is important and this article considers many issues and shapes of containers. The main interest is in the total time it takes to empty the tank for a collection of shapes. The starting point is Torricelli’s Law. The end formulae for time to empty are given, but no derivations are offered, just a few formulae. This would make a fine set of activities to confirm, and perhaps collect some data on various shapes to verify the results.

There is a first article by the same author, in Chemical Engineering, Volume 97, p. 171, from May 1990.
