Description
This modeling scenario examines the motion of a bowling ball with the goal of understanding how various aspects of the release affect ball placement and the entry angle to the pocket, each an important factor in the frequency of strikes. The equations of motion for a bowling ball are derived under modest simplifying assumptions, allowing students to examine the effect of initial velocity and spin on the path of the ball. The model can then be used to examine the sensitivity of various bowling strategies to small deviations in the initial conditions. Several ideas for additional study are included for students who wish to expand on the presented ideas.
