Description

From Landry, Keith and Brian Winkel. 2008. Peak-Frequency Responses and Tuned Mass Dampers—Exciting Applications of Systems of Differential Equations. The UMAP Journal 29(1): 15-30.

We present two  applications  of systems of ordinary differential equations concerning excitation of a structure through resonance and (1) peak frequency responses with stabilization of the structure by means of a (2) Tuned Mass Damper (TMD). The physics, engineering, and mathematics associated with these phenomena  are presented and discussed along with illustrations of how to use this material with students who are studying systems of differential equations.
