One of the links in this set, Rebich and Gautier - Concept Mapping to Reveal Prior Knowledge, was really interesting. I have used flow charts to help the students but I had not thought to use them as the basis of pre/post comparison.

I've been looking for ways to measure success in my lab so this collection was useful. I enjoyed Classroom Observation Project: Understanding and Improving Our Teaching. The eddie module can be used for student exploration. I taught the model in excel for one section and R in the other. The section with excel felt much more student lead, since they only needed to make scatter plots and regressions. But, the R section was more of a mix, I still had to work with some students on the technical aspects of coding instead of the interpretation. Overall, the eddie module was more student centered than some of my other labs, and moving forward I want to modify my other labs to be more student centered / open inquiry. It is just difficult to do that when I need to teach the students the technical skills of R programming first. One way I try to counteract this is with a culminating final project. I give students options for a few data sets and broad suggestions on questions they can answer, then they must generate the graphs and interpret the data. The final project is much more student centered. Perhaps I need to be ok with the fact that the first few technical labs are going to be instructor driven, with the payoff coming at the end of the semester with the eddie module and final project?
