Project EDDIE Spring 2023 FMN
Overview
Project EDDIE Faculty Mentoring Network
Teaching Scientific Concepts and Quantitative Reasoning Using Large Datasets and Inquiry-Based Learning
Spring 2023
Project EDDIE (Environmental Data-Driven Inquiry & Exploration) is excited to continue collaborating with BioQUEST/QUBES to work with faculty interested in adapting and implementing existing Project EDDIE teaching modules that address scientific concepts and quantitative reasoning using large datasets and inquiry-based learning. EDDIE modules are designed with an A-B-C structure moving from novice to expert and are adaptable to a range of student levels and course structures. Each module page includes activity goals, step-by-step instructions for implementing the activity, and presentations, handouts and data needed for each activity. Modules are designed to address scientific topics spanning environmental disciplines such as ecology, limnology, geology, hydrology, climate change, and environmental sciences. Participants in this Spring 2023 FMN will implement a Project EDDIE module and discuss topics such as math anxiety, inquiry-based learning, student motivation, and implementation strategies. The theme of modules we will use this spring: sustainability & climate solutions!
Project EDDIE modules were developed by the EDDIE Community composed of instructors just like you through a process consisting of peer and mentor feedback, piloting, and external review. While these modules have been designed for one class setting, a purpose of the FMN is to provide support for instructors to adapt a module for their specific context.
Commitment:
Accepted applicants must be willing to incorporate an EDDIE module into at least one lab period (or equivalent, e.g., 2-3 lecture periods) in their course during the Spring 2023 semester. Participants will adapt and implement selected EDDIE modules into their classrooms and then share their experience by writing a reflective instructor story about using an EDDIE module with the broader community via a public web page. While participating in the FMN, participants will attend virtual sessions held every other week to discuss with and support colleagues in the network and receive mentoring. Participants must also be able to commit ~1 hour per week for working with mentors and collaborating with other participants around the adaption and implementation of the teaching materials. Additional time outside of these discussions may be required for independent work on adapting and reviewing modules.
Benefits of Participation:
- Support for further development of pedagogical material focused on teaching quantitative reasoning and scientific concepts with data in the classroom
- Access to classroom ready modules: Leave the FMN with several data-driven activities that have been tested, adapted, and implemented in multiple classroom settings.
- Access to peer mentors on effective pedagogical tips and strategies in small group virtual meetings every two weeks for the length of the FMN
- Contributor: Participants will author a reflective instructor story about their experience adapting and implementing and EDDIE module. This will be shared as a QUBES resource and as an instructor story on projecteddie.org
- Receive a Certificate of Completion issued by Project EDDIE for your professional portfolio that can be sent directly to your institution
Dates & Location:
The kick-off will be held virtually in the middle of January (date and time TBD) and will be scheduled with the accepted participants. The FMN will continue (virtually) to support the adaption and implementation of modules in your course during the Spring 2023 semester.
How to Apply:
Applications are due Friday, December 16th. Accepted applicants will be notified by January 5th. Space is limited, so please be sure to apply soon. Please visit the application page for additional information and instructions about how to apply.
