Biography
I've been an adjunct instructor at Lane Community College since 2008. I've also occasionally taught classes at U of Oregon, but love the small class size, lecture/lab structure, variety of students, and awesome colleagues at LCC. I currently teach intro cell biology, intro organismal biology, intro ecology, intro evolution, intro exercise science, environmental science, wetland field methods, and have taught majors biology in the past. I teach in online, hybrid and traditional formats using both traditional texts and open educational resource models. I'm Assessment Fellow and a B2 scholar, so am currently doing work on quantifying and progressing critical thinking in Intro Biology classes.
I completed my Ph.D. at U of Oregon in ecosystem ecology, studying the effects of invasive grasses on nutrient and carbon cycling in an estuary. I also took graduate classes in human physiology, which is related to the fact that I've always balanced my academic career with one as a professional bike racer and mountain bike guide. My undergrad education in biology was from the passionate instructors University of Puget Sound. I taught English in rural Japan for a year between my undergraduate and graduate education. I'm married to my former undergraduate microbiology lab partner (who now directs the genomics and cell characterization facility at U of Oregon). I love to travel, drink beer, rock climb, garden, play board games, and ride bikes, just to name a few of my interests!
