In this lesson, learners will learn about cancer genetics and understand and interpret graphs showing quantitative trait locus (QTL) data, survivor curve data, and other genetics data. Then, learners view and reflect on an interview with Deaf biomedical researcher Dr. Megan Majocha, who is doing this research at the National Institutes of Health.

Description

This lesson was designed for a 75-min class period with in-person delivery, but could be easily adapted for remote delivery. Target student level is biology majors who already have some understanding of genetics. This module could be used in a majors-level introductory class or in an upper-level genetics or cell biology course. The materials here include an instructor guide (1_LessonGuide), an in-class presentation (Google slides; 2_PresentationSlides), a formative class activity interpreting graphs (3_FormativeAssessment_ClassActivity), a link to the interview with Dr. Megan Majocha, (BioGraphI Interview with Dr. Megan Majocha), a formative reflection assignment about the interview (4_FormativeAssessment_VideoReflectionHomework), and a summative assessment (5_SummativeAssessment_Quiz).
