Cafe BQ - fueling the hard work

We work hard and snacks fuel our thinking. Oreos are a staple. You will also find Diet Coke, because this fuels BQ founder John Jungck.

What do you request for this year's cafe?

More Awesome Postdoc Action at Life Discovery 2016

Arietta Fleming Davies and Gaby Hamerlinck rocked it at Life Discovery with a QUBES Faculty Mentoring Network workshop, and sessions on DryadLab and DataNuggets&MathBench.

And BioQUEST leaves my basement.

Following good tax keeping protocol, financial records older than 7 years were shredded, as were about 10 boxes of unreadable disc storage devices, including large floppys.  Dare we admit remembering using those?

BioQUEST in my basement...

I went through ALL these boxes.  I commend the record keepers of BioQUEST who faithfully kept every draft, printed out every email, and made multiple copies of anything official.  It was a good day when we began to trust our online email archives.  I could map every trip any BioQUEST staff made over the years based on the meticulous reimbursement receipts.  Among my favorite finds: the "Road Map/Anti-panic File," a copy of American Biology Teacher from ...? and priceless, a supportive letter from none other than our own Paul Ryan.  How things change.  Any guesses where that article on Buckminster Fuller was printed?  It wasn't Science. Who says archive diving is boring?

Gaby Hamerlinck - BioQUEST postdoc extrodinaire

In August 2015 we welcomed Gaby Hamerlinck to the BioQUEST family.  Gaby brings a deep love of quantitative biology and teaching to the QUBES project and we are lucky to have her.  Note: she is taller in person.

Gaby Hamerlinck and Alison Hale are QUBES@ NABT 2015

Awesome postdocs wow NABT participants with QUBES!  In true BioQUEST fashion, they did a workshop (technically two), one session and a poster.  Well done!

Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Gardens

In 2015 we pleased our botany and math buddies with a trek through a botanical garden loaded with biologically and mathematically intriguing botanical oddities.  As Ahrash Bissell said, "With plants, it's not really 'why'? It's more 'why not'?"

BioQUEST Moves out of Beloit

What was supposed to be a quick follow up trip to pack the last few boxes turned into a marathon session of clearing out a huge (but well organized!) store room, and a very full office.  Good thing the trailer had a flat tire and I rented what I thought to be a ridiculously oversized truck for the job.  Even though a lot of boxes didn't make the cut and were left as an offering to the recycling gods, the truck was full.  Thanks to Nate Jenkins who moved boxes, and boxes, and boxes, and boxes (you get the picture)...in exchange for his pick of the office supplies.

Still Going Strong

For the 2016 summer workshop BioQUEST has partnered with QUBES, HHMI, Science CaseNet, NAS and NSCU to organize a Special Topics Summer Institute focusing on Quantitive Reasoning in Biology. Follow the link to see what we are up to.

Not to shabby for a 30yr old.

High tech archive

While moving the BioQUEST archive from Beloit to our new digs, I ran across many interesting items that I was unable to identify.  Does anybody know what this high tech gadget was for?
