Frequently Asked Questions
1. I will be teaching lecture sections of Intro Bio. I am interested in using modules as out of class activities with in-class preparatory and summary discussions. Is this consistent with your intention?
Yes, one of the outcomes we hope to see is how real research data can be incorporated into a variety of settings, contexts, courses, and classes.
2. I'm a math professor collaborating with a biology professor to co-teach some section of an intro ecology course. Would this be possible in the context here? Would both of us need to apply? Is it possible that 2 individuals from same school will be chosen?
Yes, we welcome faculty from other disciplines who are teaching Introductory Biology or ecology to participate. The network is open to more than one faculty participating from an institution. Each applicant should apply individually and will be considered on his/her own merits.
3. Is this opportunity only available to full-time faculty or could I invite a long-term adjunct faculty member to apply?
Yes, adjunct faculty are welcome to apply.
4. Do the modules need to be implemented in a Spring 2016 course or could they be implemented during the following academic year?
Ideally, the modules would be implemented in Spring 2016. However, if accepted into the network, participants who are not able to implement the modules in Spring 2016 would be expected to generate other products e.g. ideas for extensions or adaptations of the modules for implementation in the fall.
5. Is the application open to non-U.S institutions?
Yes, this network is open to all interested faculty.
6. Is the application open to non-U.S. citizens?
Yes, non-U.S. citizens are welcome to apply.
7. Will individual faculty be able to choose the two modules to implement or will they be assigned by group?
Faculty will be able to choose the modules they are interested in. We will help facilitate them in identifying other participants/mentors to work with in a small group.
8. By what point in this process do we need to know which modules we want to use?
Participants would be expected to select the modules they wish to use by December / January. There will be a participant webinar in early January to confirm those modules.
9. Is it okay to do one module in one course and the second module in a different course?
Yes.
10. How is the program being assessed? Is the assessment focused on the faculty participating in the program or is there also a component assessing the students (like pre- and post-tests)?
QUBES’ assessment is focused on the participating faculty. At the end of the mentoring network, we will ask all participants to answer a short survey on your experiences, with the goal of improving future networks. We encourage you to work with other faculty in the programs to develop appropriate assessments for your students.
11. Are you expecting participants to produce a module as part of the deliverables?
We do not ask participants to produce their own TIEE module, but rather to share any materials you developed that coordinate with the existing modules. These related materials will be shared on the QUBES website as the products of the networks.
