“Data Discovery – Bringing research data into undergraduate classrooms”: an ESA/QUBES Faculty Mentoring Network

The Ecological Society of America (ESA) and Quantitative Undergraduate Biology Education and Synthesis project (QUBES; https://qubeshub.org) are pleased to offer a unique networking and professional development opportunity from January – May 2018 for faculty interested in bringing research data into undergraduate classrooms. Faculty will implement selected modules from ESA's Teaching Issues and Experiments in Ecology (TIEE) in their introductory biology or ecology courses, with a focus on providing students with the quantitative skillset needed to ‘scale up’ to large ecological datasets. ESA (esa.org) is the largest community of professional ecologists dedicated to the study of life on earth. Its Education and Diversity Programs office develops strategic programs to increase diversity and improve the quality of ecology education.
QUBES (qubeshub.org) is an NSF-funded virtual center that supports collaboration to promote quantitative biology education at the undergraduate level.
The ESA-QUBES partnership was initiated in 2016. The QUBES Faculty Mentoring Networks are designed to support faculty understanding and implementation of specific quantitative biology concepts and teaching approaches. This partnership brings forward ESA's initiative to prepare the education community for the massive volume of data to be available through the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) research facility project. Previous ESA efforts related to NEON education included workshops, webinars and college-speaking tours.
Dates and Location:
The 1-hour virtual kick-off workshop will take place in late-January, 2018 (date and time TBD). The faculty mentoring network will continue online to support the customization and implementation of activities in your course during the Spring 2018 semester.
To qualify, participants must be willing to incorporate two of the selected TIEE modules into their course(s) during the Spring 2018 semester. Participants must also be able to commit ~1 hour per week for working with mentors and collaborating with other participants around the customization and implementation of the teaching materials. Additional time outside of these discussions may be required for independent work on adapting and reviewing modules.

*Access ready-to-use teaching modules. Participants will incorporate at least two of the selected TIEE materials in Spring 2018 classes
*Access to peer mentors on lecture/classroom/lab effective tips and strategies in small group virtual meetings every two weeks
*Recognition as an ESA Education Scholar upon completion of all network requirements.
