ACS-GCI Adapt and Implement Faculty Mentoring Network (FMN)
Fall 2024 Semester

Applications have now closed

Participants in this FMN will focus on how to adapt and implement green chemistry modules in undergraduate chemistry courses. Accepted applicants will customize and implement newly designed educational modules from a wide range of chemistry topics. While doing this, they will participate in twice monthly virtual sessions to collaborate with and support others in the network and receive mentoring.

Description: The ACS-GCI is excited to work with faculty who are interested in adapting and implementing selected modules from a wide range of topics in green chemistry. Participating educators are encouraged to customize modules (or parts of modules) for use in their classrooms. You can see more details on the project as well as currently published modules here; ACS-GCI Green Chemistry Learning Modules

The ACS Green Chemistry Institute has partnered with chemistry instructors from over 45 institutions to develop green and sustainable chemistry education resources for undergraduate students studying general and organic chemistry. These resources address standard curricular topics through a systems thinking lens while integrating relevant green and sustainable chemistry concepts. In addition, the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals are referenced as appropriate to provide context and global relevance for students.

The ACS Green Chemistry Learning Modules draw connections between green and sustainable chemistry, systems thinking, and highlight how these ideas connect to the current chemistry curriculum. This approach to learning chemistry is centered around the foundational chemistry content found in the core chemistry curriculum, while encouraging students to become systems thinkers who relate chemistry concepts to real-world systems. The overarching goal of teaching chemistry through a systems-thinking lens is to empower students to use their knowledge of chemistry concepts and practices to create innovations that help solve sustainability challenges.

Dates & Location:

The virtual kick-off will be held in mid September (date and time TBD). The FMN will continue online to support the customization and implementation of activities in your course during the Fall 2024 semester.

How to Apply:

Applications are now closed. Please stay tuned for potential future offerings!

Commitment and Benefits of Participation:

To qualify, participants must be willing to incorporate the selected materials in their teaching during the Fall 2024 semester. Participants must also be able to commit ~1-2 hours per week for working with mentors and collaborating with other participants around the customization and implementation of the teaching materials. Additional time outside of these discussions may be required for independent work on adapting and reviewing modules.

**Access to teaching modules- participants will adapt/prepare curricular materials for use in classes during Fall 2024 or future teaching cycles.

**Online support throughout the process of implementing new materials in your course.  Access to peer mentors on lecture/classroom/lab effective tips and strategies in small group virtual meetings every two weeks
