  • Biography

My love of being outdoors and getting dirty can be traced to the long hours spent with my grandfather in his garden.  I pursued interests in biology and ecology at the University of Kansas and focused on plant-microbe interactions at Michigan State University.  I have been studying the American chestnut-chestnut blight-hypovirus interaction for almost 20 years.  I enjoy the collaborative nature of this research, working with other ecologists, plant pathologists, foresters, geneticists, and mathematicians.  Teaching at a comprehensive university gives me the best of both worlds: an active research program that involves undergraduates and master's students and an emphasis on the scholarship of teaching and learning.
