• Biography

  To improve the health of the planet and ourselves, I believe all persons must gain an appreciation for and basic understanding of the biological sciences. I have a diverse science background with training in classical microbiology and molecular biology, performing research in the fields of symbiosis, phylogenetics and agricultural microbiology. Through collaborations with citizen and research scientists I explore how and why species interact, leading to beneficial or harmful consequences. My passion is educating early career and citizen scientists through formal classes and outreach events. I am currently teaching upper level courses in microbiology and symbiosis, an environmentally focused agriculture course, and introductory biology courses. My specific research to aimed at understanding the basic biology of the fish pathogen, Yersinia ruckeri, specifically exploiting natural processes, such as phage interaction and quorum sensing, for fish and farm health. My goal for this course is to more seamlessly integrate quantitative skills into both the introductory and upper level courses that are currently taught and also being developed.
