About

  • We plan to use lactase persistence evolution as a case study (many great resources already available via HHMI, Evo-Ed, NCCSTS) to teach genetics in lecture and to potentially have students determine their personal genomics in lab as an overarching theme in a large introductory biology course. While developing these resources, we will be mindful of how we might approach teaching/learning to avoid racial bias.

  •

  • Our mission is to improve our approach to teaching genetics in large introductory biology courses (N>200 students) in order to avoid unintentionally reinforcing racial bias.

  •

  • We will work towards:

  •

    • 1.  Updating the Evo-Ed Lactase Persistence Case

    • 2.  Developing case studies on lactase persistence that can be used in an intro biology course, ecology course, and a cell and molecular course so students can effectively space out their learning and have reinforcement of ideas across various biology courses.

    • 3.  Develop training documents or tutorials that we can utilize for teaching learning assistants and teaching assistants.
