Description
Student Introduction: In addition to the cell membrane, cells contain a great deal of internal membranes that form and support organelles. Mitochondria, for example, are composed of an outer membrane and a folded, inner membrane. The volume of a cell or organelle and the surface area of the corresponding membrane surface area can greatly influence the rates of diffusion of ions and solutes into the cell or organelle. Consequently, properties of cells might change under different conditions in order to improve rates of diffusion.
