Interdisciplinarity through a modular sustainability curriculum

Description
As a concept that is inherently interdisciplinary, successful sustainability education in college curricula can be challenged by departmental boundaries. To overcome this challenge, we are developing modules that are easily incorporated into existing courses and curricula. Our curriculum is based on a set of common learning outcomes that are universally applicable across disciplines, and is fostered by a student-generated body of knowledge that is shared across courses and not dependent on pre- or co-requisite enrollment in specific courses. For each module, students in a course create digital products using the conventions of the discipline. The module closes with students using products generated by other students from multiple disciplines to reflect upon their personal choices. Our next steps are to recruit collaborators in diverse disciplines and to utilize an online publishing platform to distribute curricular materials, as well as provide a space to share student products across courses.
