I am reviewing this article as an ecology student, and in particular I will be reviewing this article's use in the classroom and its relation to student interest. The article discusses grey seal population growth and the methods used to determine its growth. As a student, I enjoy using real and full examples after learning about a concept. I like to see the methods and results to understand how people really do science. I'm much more interested in real life situations and how what I am learning can be applied than theoretical concepts and situations.

The math is complicated, but I think reviewing the paper as a class would be a valuable experience; the instructor could take the time to explain the methods and students would see how to actually perform calculations regarding populations.

I think this paper is an excellent teaching resource for undergraduates interested in ecology. It is a very good example of how quantitative methods are used by "real" biologist.  Although the math may be intimidating for many undergraduate students, most should be able to understand the overall purpose of the study as well as the discussion.
