Teaching Quantitative Reasoning and Scientific Concepts with Data

Spring 2020

Project EDDIE (Environmental Data-Driven Inquiry & Exploration) is excited to be joining forces with QUBES to work with faculty interested in adapting and implementing existing Project EDDIE teaching modules that address quantitative reasoning and scientific concepts using data. EDDIE modules are designed with an A-B-C structure to make them flexible and adaptable to a range of student levels and course structures. Each module page includes the activity goals, step-by-step instructions for implementing the activity, and presentations, handouts and data needed for each activity. Modules are designed to address scientific topics spanning environmental disciplines such as ecology, limnology, geology, hydrology, climate change, and environmental sciences. Participants in this FMN will focus on how to use Project EDDIE modules in their undergraduate courses. EDDIE modules are designed to have a flexible structure so instructors can adapt them for their specific course.

Accepted applicants must be willing to incorporate an EDDIE module into at least one lab period (or equivalent, e.g., 2/3 lecture periods) in their course during the Spring 2020 semester. Participants will adapt and implement select EDDIE modules into their classrooms followed by writing a reflective instructor story to share their experience about adopting EDDIE modules with the EDDIE and broader communities. While doing this, participants will participate in virtual sessions held every other week to collaborate with and support others in the network and receive mentoring. Participants must also be able to commit ~1 hour per week for working with mentors and collaborating with other participants around the adaption and implementation of the teaching materials. Additional time outside of these discussions may be required for independent work on adapting and reviewing modules.

  • Support for further development of pedagogical material focused on teaching quantitative reasoning and scientific concepts with data in the classroom
  • Classroom ready modules: Leave this FMN with several data-driven activities that have been tested, adapted, and implemented in multiple classroom settings. 
  • Access to peer mentors on effective pedagogical tips and strategies in small group virtual meetings every two weeks for the length of the FMN
  • Contributor: Participants will author a reflective instructor story about their experience adapting and implementing and EDDIE module

Dates & Location:

The virtual kick-off will be held in early-February, 2020 (date and time TBD) and will be scheduled with the accepted participants. The FMN will continue online to support the adaption and implementation of modules in your course during the Spring 2020 semester.
