Summer/Fall 2018

HHMI BioInteractive and the Quantitative Undergraduate Biology Education and Synthesis project (QUBES) are pleased to offer a unique networking and professional development opportunity from June 2018 –  January 2019 for faculty interested in improving student quantitative skills in biology. Faculty participants in this network will work in small groups to produce teaching resources related to the theme of regulation at different scales (cellular/molecular, physiological, ecological) that support new or existing HHMI BioInteractive materials. To qualify, participants must be willing to incorporate their teaching resource in their Introductory Biology course during the Fall 2018 semester and collect and provide data on implementation.

Commitment:

To qualify, participants must be willing to incorporate the product they create in their Introductory Biology course during the Fall 2018 semester and collect and provide data on that implementation.

All participants must commit to:

1. attending the entire BioQuest Summer Workshop at Harvey Mudd, College, CA from June 18-23, 2018, where network members will meet and collaborate on this project and participate in BioQuest and BioInteractive events. For more information about this meeting, please visit the meeting page

2. producing a single resource as a group during the summer.

3. participating in regular meetings via Zoom (June-December 2018) for ~1-2 hours per month to work with mentors and collaborate with other participants around implementation of the teaching materials.

4. spending additional time outside of these discussions for independent work on individual adaptations related to the resource.

Benefits of participation:

  • Registration and housing paid for by HHMI BioInteractive to attend the BioQuest workshop (participants will be responsible for their own travel to and from the workshop).
  • A forum for sharing expertise with network members on lecture/classroom/lab effective tips and strategies in small group virtual meetings every three weeks.
  • Review and constructive feedback on teaching module from HHMI BioInteractive staff, scientist educators, and fellow FMN participants.
  • Producing and publishing an HHMI-associated resource on the QUBES platform.

Application:

Please indicate your interest in this opportunity by completing an online Google Form. The deadline is April 9th and candidates will be notified regarding their status by April 16th. Participation is limited to 15 instructors. Participant selection will be based upon a variety of factors aimed at including faculty who represent a diversity of areas of scientific expertise, institution types, class sizes, and geography.
