Explore Authentic Data with Data Nuggets:
An LDC-QUBES Faculty Mentoring Network
Fall 2017

**This FMN is currently running and is no longer accepting applications. If you are interested in learning more about FMN opportunities, please sign up for a QUBES Newsletter (

The Life Discovery - Doing Science Biology Education Conference (LDC), Data Nuggets, and Quantitative Undergraduate Biology Education and Synthesis project (QUBES) are pleased to offer a unique networking and professional development opportunity from September – November 2017 for faculty interested in bringing authentic research data into high school and undergraduate classrooms as part of the LDC Travel Awards funded by NSF.

The Life Discovery - Doing Science Biology Education Conference (LDC) is a collaborative initiative of the Ecological Society of America, the Botanical Society of America (BSA), the Society for the Study of Evolution (SSE) and the Society for Economic Botany (SEB).
QUBES ( is an NSF-funded virtual center that supports collaboration to promote quantitative biology education at the undergraduate level.

Faculty will implement two or more selected Data Nuggets in their AP biology, introductory biology, or ecology courses. Originally developed as a collaboration between K-12 teachers and scientists, Data Nuggets are now widely used in K-16 classrooms. They are free activities that bring authentic research and data into the classroom, revealing to students how the process of science really works and increasing the connections between scientists and the public. Data Nuggets are created from cutting-edge scientific research and include authentic, and sometimes messy, scientific data. The goal of Data Nuggets is to engage students in the practices of science through an innovative approach that combines scientific content from authentic research with key concepts in quantitative reasoning. Benefits of participation:
**Access ready-to-use teaching modules. Participants will incorporate at least two of the selected Data Nuggets materials in Fall 2017 classes. Selected modules can be found here.
**Online support throughout the process of implementing new materials in your course.  Access to peer mentors on lecture/classroom/lab effective tips and strategies in small group virtual meetings every two weeks
**Travel support to attend the Life Discovery: Doing Science Biology Education Conference in Norman, OK from October 19-21, 2017
** One year membership to the Ecological Society of America (ESA) and the Botanical Society of America (BSA) included in Life Discovery Conference registration for participants who have not been members of those societies previously.
**Recognition as a 2017 Education Scholar by ESA or BSA (as appropriate) upon completion of all network requirements.
Dates, location, and time commitment:
The network will begin in September 2017, with two online meetings before the in-person meeting. Participants will attend the Life Discovery: Doing Science Biology Education Conference in Norman, OK from October 19-21 (travel support provided).  Following the conference, the faculty mentoring network will meet online biweekly through November 2017, in order to provide continuing support as participants implement Data Nuggets in their own courses.

To qualify, participants must be willing to incorporate at least two Data Nuggets into their course(s) during the Fall 2017 semester, and travel to the LDC meeting in October. Participants must also be able to commit ~1 hour per week for working with mentors and collaborating with other participants around the integration and implementation of the teaching materials. Additional time outside of these discussions may be required for independent work for review and development of supplementary materials.

Participants are also expected to add comments about the use of Data Nuggets on the QUBESHub forum and to the LifeDiscoveryEd Digital Library (LDDL).
