Biography
I have a B.S. in chemistry and biology from Walsh University. I earned a Ph.D. from The University of Akron in chemistry, with a focus on biochemistry. My doctoral work involved the synthesis of hydrogels and electrospinning as a method for drug delivery. I have taught at large and small universities and teach general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry.
While I was an undergraduate I studied in Rome, Italy and was fortunate to present research at a professional conference. Both of these experiences taught me a great deal so I have developed a passion for taking students on educational trips. I have taken students to Chicago, IL to learn about career options in the sciences. I have also taken students to present research at national meetings of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in Dallas, TX, Denver, CO, and San Diego, CA. I am currently developing a travel study program to the Netherlands, which will focus on the role of chemistry and the environment on art.
My research interests involve synthesizing antibiotic derivatives based on natural compounds and electrospinning wound dressings to decrease the heal time in rats. I am passionate about bringing chemical awareness to the general public and am particularly interested in how the marketing of pseudoscience impacts public opinion.
