Biography
Matthew Heard is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at Belmont University. He went to graduate school at Brown University where he earned a Ph.D. in the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology. Following his Ph.D. he was awarded a Voss Postdoctoral Fellowship to work in the Environmental Change Initiative at Brown University. He currently teaches courses in Environmental Science, Conservation Biology, and Belmont's general education program. His research focuses on understanding how humans impact biodiversity around the world. In particular, he focuses on understanding infectious disease emergence, the impacts of pollution on species diversity, the long-term impacts of species invasions, and climate change. Dr. Heard also has strong interests in science communication and works with students in his classes and lab to teach science to non-scientific audiences in more effective ways.
