I received my PhD in Computer Science from UC Irvine in 1983 and joined the faculty of the University of Oregon that year. My research was in parallel programming languages and high performance computing. I started some research collaborations with faculty in the Biology department in the 1990s and eventually found myself working exclusively on bioinformatics projects. In 2013 I moved to the UO Department of Biology, where I'm a member of the Institute of Ecology and Evolution. I teach courses in both departments. This year I taught part of the introductory sequence for CS majors, an advanced CS course in bioinformatics, and a introduction to programming for Biology majors.
